Mailied
Wie herrlich leuchtet
Mir die Natur!
Wie glänzt die Sonne!
Wie lacht die Flur!
Es dringen Blüten
Aus jedem Zweig
Und tausend Stimmen
Aus dem Gesträuch.
Und Freud’ und Wonne
Aus jeder Brust.
O Erd’, o Sonne!
O Glück, o Lust!
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832)
Song of May
How glorious shines
Nature for me!
How the sun shines!
How the open fields laugh!
Blossoms spring
From every bough
And a thousand chirrups
From the bushes.
And joy and bliss
From every breast.
Oh, earth, oh, sun!
Oh, happiness, oh pleasure!

I found this poem by Goethe in the first May copy of ‘Die Ganze Woche’! In Britain we would hardly find a poem in a TV and Radio programme guide! Culture in a popular context? The poem is a spontaneous, joyful celebration of spring, ecstatic and rhythmically vibrant.
Simple….and superb!
