Early Spring / Vorfrühling

These last few days of March have seen strong Fōhn winds reaching up the valley to us here in Inzing. On Sunday March 31 the radio programme Du holde Kunst broadcast poems that included this poem by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. I looked for the poem in my book ‘Twentieth-Century German Verse’ (Penguin, 1963). Here I found it, with a note beside it: “12.iv.68 (Good Friday)  St Andrews”. And Easter has come round again for me …56 years later.

Vorfrühling

Es läuft der Frühlingswind
Durch kahle Alleen,
Seltsame Dinge sind
In seinem Wehn.
Er hat sich gewiegt,
Wo Weinen war,
Und hat sich geschmiegt
In zerrüttetes Haar.
Er schüttelte nieder
Akazienblüten
Und kühlte die Glieder,
Die atmend glühten.
Lippen im Lachen
Hat er berührt,
Die weichen und wachen
Fluren durchspürt.
Er glitt durch die Flöte,
Als schluchzender Schrei,
An dämmernder Röte
Flog er vorbei.
Er flog mit Schweigen
Durch flüsternde Zimmer
Und löschte im Neigen
Der Ampel Schimmer.
Es läuft der Frühlingswind
Durch kahle Alleen,
Seltsame Dinge sind
In seinem Wehn.
Durch die glatten
Kahlen Alleen
Treibt sein Wehn
Blasse Schatten
Und den Duft,
Den er gebracht,
Von wo er gekommen
Seit gestern Nacht.

Early Spring

The spring wind is blowing
through bare avenues,
Strange things are
in its gusts.
It has settled
where there was weeping,
And has nestled
In ruffled hair.
It shook down
acacia blossoms
and cooled the limbs
that glowed as they breathed.
Laughing lips it has touched,
has quested through
soft and waking fields.
It sped through the flute
as a sobbing cry,
Past the red sky
of nightfall it flew.
It flew in silence
through whispering chambers
and, bending down, blew out
the lamp’s last glow.
The spring wind is blowing
through bare avenues,
Strange things are/ in its gusts.
Through the slippery
bare avenues
its gusts drive
pale shadows. 
And the fragrance,
which it brought
from where it came
since last night.
