Christmas Mull
By Sandra Milne-Skinner
This is a traditional Christmas drink in the UK. It’s just the thing for winter evenings after a walk in the cold. The good thing about this recipe is that you can make the mull mixture in advance, keep it in a jar in the fridge and then it’s available to use whenever you want.
Ingredients for the Mull Mixture
1 litre water
1 rounded tablespoon each of ground clove and ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
Half a teaspoon of ground ginger
1 lemon, cut into slices
1 orange, cut into slices
450 g of white sugar
Method
Add all the ingredients to the water, and simmer for at least two hours, longer if possible. Strain through a cloth into a jar and store in a cool place. It keeps for a very long time.
Ingredients for Christmas Mull
2 or 3 tablespoons of the mull mixture
1 bottle of inexpensive red wine
115 g sugar
A bottle of water
Method
Mix the ingredients and heat to near boiling point. If you want to make the Mull stronger, add some brandy. You can decorate the mull with orange and lemon slices.
